Makkoli

Makkoli is a kind of cloudy white rice wine made in Korea. It kind of looks like nigori sake but tastes a lot different.

My partner likes makkoli, and we had some while visiting Seoul in 2022.

Two glasses of makkoli. Typically they don’t have this reddish syrup poured. It was just an extra garnish added.

We visited a place in (I think it was) Hongdae. While just walking around, we saw a sign for makkoli, so we decided to check this place out. I think the name was either “느린마을” or “Human scale brew” , but my ability to read Korean is terrible, and that English might be their motto. There’s also English that says “Made Here”, but that’s definitely not their name.

A photo of the makkoli brewery we visited in Seoul. I think it was in the Hongdae district (map).

The place was both a brewery and a restaurant that served food (in fact, you had to order food). The guy that served us (shown pouring above) was also the owner of the place. He was pretty nice.
