I don’t live in Portland, but I know people who do, so this page is basically just their recommendations.

Recommended by Caroline and also Andrew.
Andrew’s recommendations
Or rather, Andrew and his partner’s recommendations.

Multnomah Whiskey Library
Went to this in 2022. Pretty cool place. The waiters (bartenders? But they’re not behind a bar. But they’re also not quite waiters because they also mix drinks.) were super knowledgeable and attentive.
-
Matt’s BBQ
Went here in May 2023. Pretty good. Nice outdoor seating area. Kind of reminded by of Fette Sau in Brooklyn.

Eem
Pretty good Thai food and drinks. A lot of their food is spicy. We got the white curry and spicy jungle curry (which had brisket). Liked the white curry a lot more. The spicy jungle curry was really clear, reminding me more of a spicy soup. It was still good though.

Places I Liked
Or at least places I’ve been to. These aren’t necessarily tourist recommendations.
-
Powell’s Books
I think this is one of the largest bookstores.
-
Mama and Hapa’s Zero Waste Shop
I like how their dispensers measure contents automatically, rather than having you weigh your container before and after.
-
The New Deal Bottle Shop
This distillery makes different kinds of spirits. I remember liking their “Hot Monkey”, which is spicy. We also bought a bottle of their Ginger Liqueur.
Their website is newdealbottleshop.com.

mama dút
A vegan Vietnamese place. Pretty good.

DIY Bar
Made a macramé plant hanger here. Also just learned the word “macramé” here. I’m sure I heard the word before, but just associated it with arts and crafts.

Interesting Portland Things
-
Check out their Benson Bubblers, which are drinking fountains that you’ll see downtown.
A couple weird things about them is that (1) they’re just constantly on, you don’t need to press anything and (2) there are some that have 4 fountain heads.
(I need to add some photos from April 2022) -
There’s a lot of food trucks and food truck parks.
The one at Matt’s BBQ seemed pretty cool.
- Elephant Ears are basically a pancake-shaped churro.
