Thai Temple (or Wat Mongkolratanaram)

Wat Mongkolratanaram is a Thai Buddhist temple in Berkeley that’s known for its brunch on Sundays. I never remember how to pronounce its name, so that’s why I call it “Thai temple”. It’s located at 1911 Russell Street (map). It’s open from 10am to 1pm on Sundays (the brunch, anyway. I don’t know the hours of the temple itself).

Wat Mongkolratanaram and its sign

You buy food with tokens. You buy tokens with cash.

Tokens were originally metal and were each equivalent to a dollar. Now tokens are plastic and have different colors for different denominations. Yellow is $10, red is $5, and green is $1.

The back side of the tokens say “Wat Mongkolratanaram” and “San Francisco Bay Area” around a wheel of dharma.

There are multiple types of food you can get. The main two are the meat line and veggie lines. There’s also a line that has soup. There’s a line for desserts. There’s a line for Thai iced tea and coffee. I heard there’s also some kind of chicken line.

My partner orders food at the meat line. To-go boxes are an extra dollar.
Some of the other options at the meat line

I mostly just go to the meat line (which also has vegetarian options) and get a pad thai, string beans, and something else. I also always get the Thai iced tea.
